What is my cat trying to tell me?

Cats are mysterious creatures. Understanding their ways of communicating can take time to decipher. Their body language and the way they meow mean different things. The type of meow can determine if they want food, attention, or some other emotion. Let us dive into the complexities of the feline language.

In A Good Mood

A familiar noise a cat makes is purring. A cat will purr when they are happy and comfortable. When a cat rubs its face at you, it enjoys the company. Kneading on your arm or leg also means they like you.

When cats become excited, they make chirping noises. These noises are quick and quiet. It sounds like a bird chatting in delight. Mothers often make this noise when communicating with their kittens.

In A Bad Mood

If your cat is in pain, they make a howling noise. A howl indicates your cat needs care and may be ill. Usually, a cat will howl before they vomit. If your cat is being less friendly than usual and is hiding, that can also mean they are in pain or sick. On the other hand, howling may mean they are guarding their territory from other animals or cats.

Cats who wag their tails signify they are frustrated or overwhelmed. Your cat may be shy around people and want to be left alone, so consider their feelings. A tail sticking straight up and an arching back means your cat is scared or angry. Hissing is another obvious sign that something is wrong and your cat is mad or threatened.
